Abstract

This article discusses the importance of language as a social phenomenon in the construction of knowledge. The authors explore Bakhtin's Circle theory of dialogy and social interaction, as well as Vygotsky's theory of social and cultural learning. They also analyze Paulo Freire's theory of critical and problematizing education, which seeks to make individuals aware of their social and historical reality. Based on these theories, the authors discuss how the illiterate gypsy, who reads Paulo Freire's hand, in the song Béradêro, by Chico César, from Paraíba, can be seen as a critique of the notion that knowledge is limited to literate elites.
